NOTAM: Hydrate!

NOTAM: Hydrate!

We don’t have to tell you the heat is on. Just a few weeks ago, the afternoon heat index in VNC was a whopping 128 degrees F, making just the taxi itself a ride in a crock pot! Put several planes in the pattern ahead of you and in no time, you’re a soaking mess before you even get the chance to climb to 64 degrees.

Which begs the important reminder to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. That’s easier said than done. Yes, it’s easy to carry water onboard and you should always have a few bottles for yourself and those flying with you. Keep a case in the hangar. It’s great insurance. A bathroom is always at the end of every runway.

But for those venturing out on a long cross country, it becomes a delicate balancing act: Staying hydrated, while avoiding the necessity of pulling over for an unscheduled bio break. The best trick is to simply remember to take a few sips every 15 to 30 minutes. Switch tanks, top off your body. Switch frequencies, top off your body. It’s a simple, yet easily overlooked physiological need. It maintains clarity and visual acuity, and it’s cheaper than AvGas. And don’t forget the deviations and holds. Those can add 30 minutes to your trip, as well.

But don’t forget to hydrate after the flight. You’re just as prone to dehydration afterwards. In fact, if you rationed, then is the time to drink up!

Fly Friendly. Fly Safe.
